Choose healthy, disease-free sweet potatoes
Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly
Cut large sweet potatoes in half if needed
Suspend each sweet potato in a jar or container with the bottom half in water
Use toothpicks to hold the sweet potato in place if needed
Place the container in a warm, bright location
Keep the water level touching the bottom of the sweet potato
Change the water every few days
Wait for sprouts to form on the sweet potato
Let the sprouts grow to about 4 to 6 inches long
Twist or cut the sprouts off the sweet potato
Place the slips in water until roots develop
Plant the rooted slips in soil after the last frost
Space the slips properly in the garden or containers
