How to Treat a Wound?

Wash your hands thoroughly

Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth or sterile gauze

Elevate the injured area if possible

Rinse the wound with clean running water

Remove visible dirt or debris with clean tweezers

Clean around the wound with mild soap and water

Pat the area dry with a clean cloth

Apply an antiseptic if appropriate

Cover the wound with a sterile bandage or dressing

Change the dressing daily or when wet or dirty

Keep the wound clean and dry

Watch for signs of infection

Seek medical care for deep, large, or heavily bleeding wounds

Seek medical care if bleeding does not stop

Seek medical care if the wound was caused by an animal bite, puncture, or dirty object

Seek medical care if tetanus vaccination is not up to date
