Keep the ear dry

Avoid swimming until symptoms improve

Do not put anything into the ear canal

Use over-the-counter pain relievers as directed

Apply a warm compress to the outside of the ear

Use ear drops only if a clinician has recommended them

Lie with the affected ear facing down to help drainage

Avoid using cotton swabs, fingers, or earbuds in the ear

Seek medical care if pain is severe, swelling worsens, fever develops, or hearing decreases

Get urgent care if there is pus, bleeding, dizziness, or symptoms do not improve within 1 to 2 days
