Locate the meter display or dial face
Check the unit label, usually kWh
Read the numbers from left to right
Ignore any red digits or digits after a decimal point if instructed by your utility
For a digital meter, note the full displayed number
For an analog meter, record each dial number in sequence
If a dial points between two numbers, use the lower number unless it is between 9 and 0, then use 9
Compare the current reading with the previous reading to find usage
Submit the reading exactly as shown by your utility’s instructions
