Disconnect power to the solenoid
Remove the solenoid from the circuit if needed
Set the multimeter to resistance mode
Place the probes on the solenoid terminals
Check for continuity
Compare the resistance reading to the manufacturer’s specification
A very high or infinite reading indicates an open coil
A very low reading indicates a shorted coil
Set the multimeter to voltage mode if testing power supply
Reconnect power and measure voltage at the solenoid terminals
Verify the correct supply voltage is present
Set the multimeter to current mode if testing coil current
Check that current draw matches specifications
Inspect for loose, corroded, or damaged terminals
Test the solenoid for clicking or movement when energized
Replace the solenoid if readings are out of specification
