Drink more water throughout the day
Increase fiber intake gradually (fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, whole grains, prunes)
Consider fiber supplements (psyllium) with plenty of water
Stay physically active (regular walking)
Establish a consistent bathroom routine (try after meals)
Don’t ignore the urge to have a bowel movement
Use safe over-the-counter options if needed:
Osmotic laxatives (polyethylene glycol/PEG, lactulose)
Stool softeners (docusate)
Stimulant laxatives for short-term use (senna, bisacodyl)
Consider a glycerin suppository if stools are stuck in the rectum
If you suspect dehydration or medication-related constipation, review medications with a clinician
Seek urgent care if you have severe abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, a swollen/distended belly, blood in stool, or inability to pass gas
Contact a clinician if constipation lasts more than a week, is recurrent, or you have unexplained weight loss, anemia, or new constipation after age 50
