Eat smaller meals
Avoid eating within 2–3 hours of bedtime
Identify and limit trigger foods (spicy foods, fatty foods, chocolate, peppermint, caffeine, alcohol, citrus, tomato-based foods, carbonated drinks)
Reduce or stop smoking
Maintain a healthy weight
Avoid tight belts or waistbands
Sleep with the head of the bed elevated 6–8 inches (use blocks or a wedge pillow)
Use left-side sleeping if it helps
Chew sugar-free gum after meals
Wear loose clothing around the abdomen
Stay hydrated and avoid large volumes of fluid with meals
Consider antacids for occasional symptoms
Consider H2 blockers (famotidine) for recurring symptoms
Consider proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, esomeprazole, etc.) for frequent symptoms as directed
Review medications with a clinician if symptoms persist (some can worsen reflux)
Seek medical care urgently for chest pain, trouble swallowing, vomiting blood, black/tarry stools, unexplained weight loss, anemia, or persistent vomiting
Make an appointment if symptoms occur more than twice a week or do not improve after 2–4 weeks of appropriate treatment
