Rinse your mouth with warm salt water
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek
Avoid very hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks
Chew on the opposite side of your mouth
Floss gently to remove trapped food
Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush
Use desensitizing toothpaste
Apply clove oil sparingly to the painful area
Use an oral numbing gel as directed
Keep your head elevated when lying down
See a dentist as soon as possible
Seek urgent care if you have swelling, fever, or trouble swallowing
