Hold the cane in the hand opposite your weaker or injured leg
Adjust the cane height so the handle is at wrist level when standing upright with arms relaxed
Keep a slight bend in your elbow when holding the cane
Place the cane about one step ahead and slightly to the side
Move the cane and your weaker leg forward at the same time
Shift weight onto the cane and stronger leg as needed
Step through with your stronger leg after the cane and weaker leg
Keep the cane close to your body
Look ahead, not down at your feet
Take slow, even steps
Use the cane on stairs by stepping up with the stronger leg first
Use the cane on stairs by placing it down first when stepping down
Hold the handrail whenever possible on stairs
Check the cane tip regularly for wear or damage
Use non-slip rubber tips on the cane
Keep walkways clear of obstacles
Wear supportive, non-slip shoes
Follow any specific instructions from your doctor or physical therapist
