Rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in 1 cup warm water) 3–4 times daily
Use an over-the-counter oral pain reliever gel or paste (benzocaine, or similar) as directed
Apply a protective oral coating (e.g., benzocaine/other barrier products) to reduce irritation
Use an over-the-counter mouthwash for canker sores (as directed)
Avoid spicy, acidic (citrus/tomato), salty, or rough foods that worsen pain
Use a soft toothbrush and brush gently
Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes
Stay hydrated and maintain good oral hygiene
Consider using a non-irritating toothpaste (often “gentle” or for sensitive mouths)
If sores are frequent, ask a clinician about checking for triggers such as vitamin B12, folate, iron, or celiac disease
Consider prescription treatment if needed (topical corticosteroids or other therapies)
Seek urgent dental/medical care if sores last longer than 2 weeks, are very large, occur with fever, spread widely, cause trouble swallowing, or you have a weakened immune system
Seek care sooner if you get recurrent sores often or have new ulcers without a clear cause
