Put on rubber gloves
Remove excess water from the bowl if it is near the rim
Place the plunger over the toilet drain opening
Make sure the plunger forms a tight seal
Push down gently at first
Pull up firmly
Repeat the push-and-pull motion several times
Keep the seal intact while plunging
Flush the toilet to check if the clog is cleared
Repeat plunging if needed
Stop and call a plumber if the toilet still will not drain
