Disconnect the negative battery terminal
Locate the EGR valve
Remove any engine covers or intake components blocking access
Disconnect the electrical connector and vacuum lines, if equipped
Remove the EGR valve mounting bolts
Take the EGR valve off the engine
Inspect the valve, passages, and gasket for heavy carbon buildup or damage
Spray EGR valve cleaner or throttle body cleaner on the carbon deposits
Use a soft brush or nylon brush to loosen buildup
Wipe away loosened carbon with a clean lint-free cloth
Clean the EGR passages and ports on the intake manifold
Avoid forcing the valve open or damaging the pintle
Replace the gasket if it is damaged or worn
Reinstall the EGR valve and tighten the bolts to specification
Reconnect vacuum lines and electrical connectors
Reinstall any removed components
Reconnect the negative battery terminal
Start the engine and check for leaks, warning lights, or rough idle
Clear any diagnostic trouble codes if needed
