Pat the black cod dry and season lightly with salt

Marinate if desired, such as with miso, soy, mirin, and sugar

Preheat the oven to 400°F

Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat

Add a little oil to the skillet

Sear the black cod skin-side down for 2 to 3 minutes

Flip the fish carefully

Transfer the skillet to the oven

Bake for 6 to 10 minutes, until the fish flakes easily

Alternatively, broil for 4 to 6 minutes after searing

Remove from the oven and rest for 2 minutes

Serve with rice, vegetables, or a simple sauce
