Rinse the sardines under cold water and pat them dry
Remove scales, heads, and innards if needed
Season with salt, pepper, garlic, and lemon juice
Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat
Dredge the sardines lightly in flour if desired
Place sardines in the hot pan
Cook for 2 to 4 minutes per side until golden and cooked through
Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels
Serve with lemon wedges or your preferred side dish
