How to Detect Exhaust Leak?

Start the engine and listen for ticking, tapping, or puffing sounds near the exhaust manifold, gaskets, and pipes

Check for visible soot or black carbon marks around exhaust joints, flanges, manifold, and tailpipe connections

Look for a strong exhaust smell in or around the engine bay, under the vehicle, or inside the cabin

Inspect for cracked, rusted, or loose exhaust components

Feel for escaping gases near suspected joints only when the engine is cold and using caution

Use a smoke test to reveal leaks in the exhaust system

Spray soapy water on suspected joints and watch for bubbling while the engine is running

Check for rattling or hissing noises that change with engine speed

Inspect the cabin for symptoms like headaches, dizziness, or fumes, which may indicate an exhaust leak

Examine the exhaust manifold gasket and flex pipe for common leak points

Use a mechanic’s stethoscope or a length of hose to pinpoint the leak source

Scan for trouble codes or abnormal oxygen sensor readings that may suggest an exhaust leak

Check for heat discoloration or warped parts near the leak area
