How to Divide Hosta Plants?

Choose a mature hosta clump with multiple crowns

Divide in early spring or early fall

Water the plant thoroughly the day before dividing

Dig around the entire clump and lift it from the ground

Shake or wash off excess soil to expose the crowns

Separate the clump into sections by hand or with a sharp knife or spade

Make sure each division has roots and at least one or two growing points

Trim damaged roots or leaves if needed

Replant divisions at the same depth as the original plant

Space divisions adequately for future growth

Water the newly planted divisions well

Keep the soil consistently moist until established

Mulch around the plants to help retain moisture

Avoid dividing during hot, dry weather
