Cut all bamboo culms to ground level
Remove all visible rhizomes and roots with a shovel, mattock, or digging fork
Dig a trench around the bamboo patch to expose spreading rhizomes
Follow rhizomes outward and remove every section you can find
Repeat cutting new shoots immediately as they appear
Mow or cut shoots frequently to exhaust the rhizome system
Cover the area with a heavy-duty, opaque tarp or multiple layers of landscape fabric
Extend the barrier well beyond the visible patch
Secure the covering tightly and keep all light from reaching shoots
Inspect the area regularly and cut or dig out any shoots that emerge
Dispose of removed bamboo in sealed bags or by drying completely before composting
Apply a systemic herbicide to fresh cut stems or actively growing shoots if chemical control is acceptable
Reapply control measures over multiple growing seasons until no regrowth appears
Monitor surrounding areas for escaped rhizomes and remove them promptly
