Apply a warm compress to the affected eyelid for 10–15 minutes, 3–6 times per day
Gently massage the eyelid toward the lash line after the warm compress
Keep the area clean; wash hands before and after touching the eyelid
Avoid makeup, contact lenses, and rubbing the eye
Do not squeeze, pop, or puncture the stye
Use artificial tears if the eye feels irritated
If needed, use over-the-counter pain relief you can safely take (follow label directions)
See a clinician promptly if symptoms worsen, spread, or do not improve within 48–72 hours
Seek urgent care immediately for severe pain, vision changes, significant swelling around the eye, fever, or trouble moving the eye
Ask a clinician about treatment options such as prescription antibiotic ointment/drops or oral antibiotics if indicated
If recurrent or persistent, ask about evaluation for underlying eyelid conditions (e.g., blepharitis)
