Remove the stopper cap if it unscrews or lifts off
Look for a set screw on the stopper and loosen it with an Allen wrench
Twist the stopper counterclockwise to unscrew it
Pull the stopper straight up if it is a lift-and-turn style
Press down and rotate the stopper if it is a push-pull style
Remove the overflow plate screws if the stopper is linked to the overflow
Pull the linkage or cable out carefully through the overflow opening
Use needle-nose pliers to grip and lift a stuck stopper
Wiggle the stopper gently while pulling upward
Apply penetrating oil to the threads if the stopper is stuck
Clean hair and debris from around the stopper before removing it
Check for hidden clips or retaining rings and remove them
Reinstall the stopper by reversing the removal steps
