How to Grill Burgers on Charcoal Grill?

Preheat the charcoal grill until the coals are covered with gray ash

Set up two heat zones by piling coals on one side and leaving the other side cooler

Clean the grill grates

Lightly oil the grill grates

Form burger patties slightly wider than the buns

Make a small indentation in the center of each patty

Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper

Place the patties on the hot side of the grill

Close the lid if using one

Grill for about 3 to 5 minutes on the first side

Flip the burgers once

Grill for another 3 to 5 minutes for medium doneness

Move burgers to the cooler side if flare-ups occur

Add cheese during the last minute if desired

Check internal temperature for doneness

Remove burgers from the grill

Let burgers rest for a few minutes

Toast the buns on the grill if desired

Assemble and serve the burgers
