Remove the pit from a ripe avocado
Rinse the pit to remove all fruit residue
Identify the top and bottom ends of the pit
Insert three or four toothpicks around the middle of the pit
Suspend the pit over a glass of water with the bottom end submerged
Place the glass in a warm spot with indirect sunlight
Change the water every few days
Wait for the pit to split and roots to grow
Wait for a stem and leaves to emerge
Keep the roots submerged as they grow
Plant the sprouted pit in a pot with well-draining soil
Leave the top half of the pit above the soil
Water the soil lightly after planting
Place the pot in bright indirect light
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry
Transplant to a larger pot as the plant grows
