Remove the seed from a ripe avocado
Rinse the seed clean
Identify the top and bottom of the seed
Insert 3 to 4 toothpicks around the middle of the seed
Suspend the seed over a glass of water with the bottom half submerged
Place the glass in a warm, bright location
Change the water every few days
Wait for the seed to split and roots to grow
Wait for a stem and leaves to emerge
Plant the seed in a pot when roots are several inches long
Use well-draining potting soil
Keep the top half of the seed above the soil
Water the soil regularly but do not overwater
Place the potted plant in bright indirect sunlight
Move it to a larger pot as it grows
Protect it from cold temperatures
Prune the tree to encourage branching
Fertilize lightly during the growing season
