Rest the ankle completely
Keep weight off the injured foot
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time
Repeat icing every 2–3 hours while awake
Wrap the ankle with a snug elastic bandage
Elevate the ankle above heart level
Take over-the-counter pain relief if safe for you
Avoid heat, alcohol, and massage during the first 24–48 hours
Use crutches or a brace if needed to limit walking
Sleep with the ankle supported on pillows
Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight, pain is severe, swelling is extreme, or the ankle looks deformed
