Warm the engine slightly, then turn it off and let it cool enough to handle safely
Clean the filter area to improve grip
Use an oil filter wrench or strap wrench
Turn the filter counterclockwise to loosen it
If space is tight, use a cap-style filter wrench with a ratchet
If the filter is stuck, tap the wrench gently to break it free
Apply penetrating oil around the filter base if needed
Use a larger wrench or pliers only if the filter is being replaced
Avoid over-tightening when installing the new filter
