Apply a cold compress or ice wrapped in cloth for 10 to 15 minutes at a time
Keep your head elevated
Avoid touching, rubbing, or biting the lip
Rinse gently with cool water if the swelling is from irritation
Take an over-the-counter antihistamine if the swelling is from an allergic reaction and you can safely use it
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed and safe for you
Avoid hot, spicy, salty, or acidic foods
Avoid alcohol and smoking
Use a lip balm or ointment if the lip is dry or cracked
Remove any suspected trigger such as a new cosmetic, food, or dental product
Seek urgent medical care if you have trouble breathing, tongue swelling, throat tightness, or rapidly worsening swelling
Seek medical care if the swelling follows an injury, bite, infection, or does not improve within 24 to 48 hours
