Decide the step width, rise, and run
Choose the step location and mark it clearly
Calculate the number of steps needed
Determine the total rise and divide it evenly
Cut the stringers to match the step layout
Use pressure-treated lumber or approved outdoor materials
Attach the stringers securely to the deck frame
Set the stringers on a stable landing or footing
Install step treads on each stringer
Fasten each tread with exterior-rated screws
Make sure all steps are level and evenly spaced
Add risers if required by code or design
Install handrails if the step height requires them
Check for wobble, loose fasteners, and safe footing
Seal, stain, or paint the steps as needed
