Rest the swollen area
Elevate the area above heart level
Apply a cold pack for 15–20 minutes at a time
Use compression if appropriate
Remove tight clothing, rings, or shoes
Limit salt intake
Stay hydrated
Move gently to improve circulation
Avoid heat, alcohol, and strenuous activity
Take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine if safe for you
Treat any injury, allergy, or infection causing the swelling
Seek medical care if swelling is severe, sudden, painful, red, warm, or persistent
