Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear
Measure the rice and water accurately
Use the correct water ratio for the rice type
Soak the rice if needed for the variety you are cooking
Bring the water to a boil
Add the rice and a pinch of salt if desired
Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot tightly
Do not lift the lid while the rice cooks
Cook until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender
Remove from heat and let it rest covered for a few minutes
Fluff the rice gently with a fork or rice paddle
Serve immediately or keep warm covered
