Use clean, sharp, disinfected pruning shears
Remove spent blooms by cutting just above the first five-leaflet leaf

Trim lightly to shape the plant
Avoid heavy pruning in hot summer weather
Make cuts at a 45-degree angle
Cut to an outward-facing bud
Remove suckers from below the graft union
Clear fallen leaves and debris from around the plant
Water the rose after pruning if the soil is dry
Dispose of diseased clippings away from the garden
