How to Push During Labor?

Follow the guidance of your doctor, midwife, or labor nurse

Push only when you feel the urge or when instructed

Take a deep breath at the start of a contraction

Hold your breath briefly while pushing if directed

Push downward and outward, as if having a bowel movement

Use your abdominal muscles and pelvic floor

Push for about 5 to 10 seconds at a time if coached

Rest and breathe between pushes

Push 2 to 3 times during each contraction if instructed

Change positions if recommended and comfortable

Keep your chin tucked and relax your face, shoulders, and hands

Empty your bladder if possible

Stop pushing if told to pause

Ask for help if you feel dizzy, exhausted, or unable to continue
