Clean the blade with a cloth and remove dirt, sap, and rust
Secure the machete on a stable surface or in a vise
Inspect the edge for nicks, chips, and dull spots
Choose a sharpening tool such as a file, whetstone, or sharpening stone
Match the existing bevel angle while sharpening
Draw the file or stone along the edge from base to tip in smooth, even strokes
Keep consistent pressure on each stroke
Sharpen one side until a burr forms along the opposite edge
Repeat on the other side if needed, or maintain a single bevel if that is the blade design
Remove the burr with lighter alternating strokes
Finish with a finer stone or strop for a smoother edge
Wipe the blade clean and apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust
Test the edge carefully on paper, rope, or soft vegetation
