Remove the toilet tank lid
Lift the flapper and let it reseat
Check that the chain is not stuck or too tight
Adjust the float so the water stops filling sooner
Turn the water supply valve clockwise to stop the flow
Flush once to confirm the toilet is no longer running
If needed, hold the flapper closed until the tank stops refilling
