Put on gloves
Turn off the toilet water supply if the bowl is close to overflowing
Remove excess water from the bowl if needed
Use a plunger with a good seal over the drain opening
Push and pull the plunger firmly several times
Repeat until the water drains
Flush to check if the clog is cleared
Use a toilet auger if plunging does not work
Insert the auger into the drain opening
Turn the handle to break up or pull out the blockage
Flush again to confirm the toilet is clear
Use hot water and dish soap if the clog is minor
Pour the mixture into the bowl and wait a few minutes
Try plunging again
Avoid flushing repeatedly if the toilet is still clogged
Call a plumber if the clog will not clear
