Drink plenty of fluids (water, oral rehydration solution, broth)

Avoid caffeine
Avoid fatty, spicy, or very sugary foods
Avoid dairy if it worsens symptoms
Avoid high-fiber foods temporarily (bran, raw vegetables)
Consider probiotics (follow label directions)
Consider bismuth subsalicylate for adults (follow label directions; avoid if allergic to aspirin, on blood thinners, or with certain medical conditions)
Consider loperamide for adults to reduce watery stool if there is no fever and no blood in stool (follow label directions; do not use for children unless directed by a clinician)
Check with a clinician before using anti-diarrheal medicines if you are pregnant, elderly, immunocompromised, or have significant medical conditions
Seek medical care urgently if you have blood or black/tarry stool
Seek medical care urgently if you have high fever, severe abdominal pain, or persistent vomiting
Seek medical care urgently if diarrhea lasts more than 2 days (adults) or 24 hours (children)
Seek medical care urgently if signs of dehydration occur (very little urine, dizziness, dry mouth, severe weakness)
If on antibiotics, contact a clinician if diarrhea is severe or persistent
Make sure to practice good hygiene (handwashing, avoid preparing food for others while sick)
