Call emergency services immediately
Apply firm direct pressure with a clean cloth, gauze, or bandage
Keep pressure constant without lifting to check the wound
Add more cloth on top if blood soaks through
Elevate the injured area above heart level if possible
Have the person lie down and stay still
If bleeding is from an arm or leg, apply a tourniquet above the wound if trained to do so
Tighten the tourniquet until bleeding stops
Note the time the tourniquet was applied
Do not remove objects stuck in the wound
Do not use a tourniquet on the neck, chest, or abdomen
If bleeding is from the mouth or nose, lean the person forward
If the person becomes pale, weak, confused, or unresponsive, treat as an emergency immediately
Keep the person warm while waiting for help
