Let the engine cool completely
Place a drain pan under the filter
Wear gloves
Locate the oil filter
Clean the area around the filter
Try loosening it by hand
Use an oil filter wrench if it is too tight
Turn the filter counterclockwise
If needed, use a strap wrench, cap wrench, or pliers-style filter tool
Move the filter slowly to avoid spills
Remove the filter once it is loose
Check that the old gasket came off with the filter
Wipe the mounting surface clean
