Wash hands frequently and avoid touching your eyes
Use a clean warm compress on the affected eye for 5 to 10 minutes, several times a day
Use a clean cool compress if the eye feels itchy or swollen
Gently clean any discharge with a clean, damp cloth or sterile saline
Avoid contact lenses until symptoms fully resolve
Replace or disinfect eye makeup, contact lens cases, and any items that may be contaminated
Do not share towels, pillows, washcloths, or eye products
Use preservative-free artificial tears to help soothe irritation
Rest your eyes and avoid rubbing them
Stay hydrated and get enough sleep
Reduce exposure to smoke, dust, and other irritants
Try a saline eye rinse with sterile saline only
Seek medical care if you have eye pain, vision changes, light sensitivity, severe redness, thick discharge, or symptoms that worsen or do not improve
