Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the wound
Rinse the wound gently with clean running water or saline
Clean the skin around the wound with mild soap and water
Remove visible dirt or debris with clean tweezers if needed
Pat the area dry with a clean towel or sterile gauze
Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment if not allergic
Cover the wound with a sterile non-stick bandage
Change the dressing daily or whenever it becomes wet or dirty
Keep the wound clean and dry
Avoid picking, squeezing, or scratching the wound
Elevate the affected area if it is swollen
Use a warm compress for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and safe for you
Watch for worsening redness, swelling, pain, pus, or fever
Seek medical care promptly if the infection is spreading or not improving
Get urgent medical help if you have red streaks, severe pain, fever, or trouble moving the area
See a doctor immediately for deep wounds, bite wounds, puncture wounds, or wounds with foreign objects
Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date
