Ensure the scene is safe
Check for responsiveness
Call emergency services or have someone else call
Send someone to get an AED
Check breathing for no more than 10 seconds
If not breathing or only gasping, start CPR
Place the person on their back on a firm surface
Kneel beside the chest
Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest
Place the other hand on top and interlock fingers
Keep arms straight
Position shoulders directly over hands
Push hard and fast at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute
Compress the chest at least 2 inches
Allow full chest recoil after each compression
Minimize interruptions
After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths if trained and willing
Open the airway by tilting the head back and lifting the chin
Pinch the nose shut
Give 1 breath over 1 second
Watch for chest rise
Give a second breath
Continue cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths
If not trained or unwilling to give breaths, do continuous chest compressions
Use the AED as soon as it arrives
Turn on the AED and follow the prompts
Attach the pads to the bare chest as shown on the pads
Clear the person during rhythm analysis
Deliver a shock if advised
Resume CPR immediately after the shock or if no shock is advised
Continue until emergency help takes over
Stop if the person starts breathing normally
Stop if you are too exhausted to continue
Stop if the scene becomes unsafe
