Confirm live lice or nits close to the scalp
Use an over-the-counter lice treatment exactly as directed
Follow the full treatment schedule on the product label
Comb wet hair with a fine-toothed lice comb to remove lice and nits
Repeat combing every 2 to 3 days for 2 weeks
Recheck the scalp 8 to 12 hours after treatment
Repeat treatment if the product instructions require it
Wash bedding, hats, scarves, and recently worn clothing in hot water
Dry washed items on high heat
Seal non-washable items in a plastic bag for 2 weeks
Vacuum carpets, furniture, and car seats
Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 10 minutes
Avoid sharing combs, brushes, hats, and pillows
Check and treat close household contacts if lice are found
Keep children at home until after the first treatment
