Wash your hands with soap and warm water
Soak the finger in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Gently lift the edge of the nail with clean dental floss or a small piece of cotton if it is slightly ingrown
Keep the area clean and dry between soaks
Apply an antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover the finger with a clean bandage if needed
Wear loose-fitting gloves or avoid pressure on the finger
Trim nails straight across and avoid cutting them too short
Do not dig into the nail or cut into the skin
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and if safe for you
See a doctor if there is severe pain, swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, or no improvement
Seek urgent care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
