Soak the finger in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Keep the finger clean and dry between soaks
Gently lift the nail edge with clean cotton or dental floss if it is not too painful
Apply an antiseptic or antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover with a clean bandage if needed
Avoid cutting or digging into the nail corner
Trim fingernails straight across in the future
Wear gloves or protect the finger from repeated trauma
Use over-the-counter pain relief if appropriate
Seek medical care if there is pus, spreading redness, severe pain, fever, or no improvement
See a doctor promptly if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
