Wash your hands before touching the wound
Rinse the wound gently with clean running water
Clean around the wound with mild soap and water
Remove visible dirt or debris with clean tweezers if needed
Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze if bleeding
Pat the area dry with a clean cloth or sterile gauze
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment if not allergic
Cover the wound with a sterile non-stick bandage
Change the dressing daily or when wet or dirty
Keep the wound clean and dry
Avoid picking, squeezing, or scratching the wound
Elevate the area if swollen
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and safe for you
Seek medical care if redness spreads, pain worsens, pus increases, fever develops, red streaks appear, or the wound is deep, large, or from a bite or puncture
Seek urgent care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, a weakened immune system, or the wound is on the face, hand, genitals, or near a joint
Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date
