How to Care for Road Rash?

Wash your hands before touching the wound

Rinse the road rash gently with clean running water

Remove visible dirt or debris with clean tweezers if needed

Pat the area dry with a clean cloth or sterile gauze

Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly

Cover with a non-stick sterile bandage or dressing

Change the dressing daily or whenever it becomes wet or dirty

Keep the wound clean and moist, not dry and crusted

Watch for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or fever

Seek medical care if the wound is deep, large, bleeding heavily, or has embedded debris

Seek medical care if you cannot remove dirt, the pain worsens, or movement is limited
