Turn off power to the equipment
Discharge the capacitor safely
Remove the capacitor from the circuit or disconnect at least one lead
Inspect the capacitor for bulging, leaking, or damage
Set a multimeter to capacitance mode
Connect the meter probes to the capacitor terminals
Read the capacitance value
Compare the reading to the rated value on the capacitor
Replace the capacitor if the reading is outside the acceptable tolerance
If no capacitance mode is available, set the multimeter to resistance mode
Place the probes on the terminals and watch for a brief resistance change
Reverse the probes and repeat the resistance check
Replace the capacitor if it shows a short, open, or no change in resistance
Reinstall the capacitor after testing if it is good
