How To Use Crutches?

Adjust the crutches so the top pads sit 1–2 inches below your armpits

Grip the handles with your elbows slightly bent

Keep your weight on your hands, not on your armpits

Stand upright with the crutches slightly in front of and to the side of your feet

Move both crutches forward together

Place the injured leg forward between the crutches

Step through with the uninjured leg if instructed to do so

Take small, steady steps

Look ahead, not down at your feet

Use handrails on stairs when available

Go up stairs with the good leg first

Bring the crutches and injured leg up together when going upstairs

Go down stairs with the crutches first

Bring the injured leg down with the crutches when going downstairs

Keep stairs and walking paths clear of obstacles

Wear non-slip shoes

Avoid wet or uneven surfaces when possible

Do not place weight on the injured leg unless told to do so

Check crutch tips regularly for wear

Stop and rest if you feel dizzy, weak, or unsteady
