Adjust the crutches so the top pads sit 1–2 inches below your armpits
Grip the handles with your elbows slightly bent
Keep your weight on your hands, not on your armpits
Stand upright with the crutches slightly in front of and to the side of your feet
Move both crutches forward together
Place the injured leg forward between the crutches
Step through with the uninjured leg if instructed to do so
Take small, steady steps
Look ahead, not down at your feet
Use handrails on stairs when available
Go up stairs with the good leg first
Bring the crutches and injured leg up together when going upstairs
Go down stairs with the crutches first
Bring the injured leg down with the crutches when going downstairs
Keep stairs and walking paths clear of obstacles
Wear non-slip shoes
Avoid wet or uneven surfaces when possible
Do not place weight on the injured leg unless told to do so
Check crutch tips regularly for wear
Stop and rest if you feel dizzy, weak, or unsteady
