Use warm sitz baths for 10–15 minutes, several times a day
Apply cold packs for 10–15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling
Keep the area clean and gently pat dry after bowel movements
Use over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams or suppositories as directed
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and safe for you
Increase fiber intake with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, or fiber supplements
Drink plenty of water throughout the day
Avoid straining during bowel movements
Do not sit on the toilet for long periods
Exercise regularly to help prevent constipation
Use a stool softener if constipation is a problem
Avoid heavy lifting and activities that increase pressure
Wear loose, breathable clothing
See a doctor if pain is severe, bleeding is heavy, or symptoms do not improve
Seek urgent care if you have a hard, very painful lump or significant rectal bleeding
