Rest and sleep as much as possible
Drink plenty of fluids (water, tea, broth) to stay hydrated
Warm fluids or steam inhalation for temporary throat/nasal relief
Gargle warm salt water for sore throat
Use saline nasal spray or saline rinse to loosen congestion
Use a humidifier or take a warm shower to ease breathing at night
Honey (1–2 teaspoons) for cough/throat irritation (avoid for children under 1 year)
Over-the-counter pain/fever relief: acetaminophen or ibuprofen (follow label directions)
For nasal congestion: a decongestant nasal spray (use no more than 3 days) or an oral decongestant (follow label directions)
For cough: dextromethorphan (follow label directions)
For mucus: guaifenesin (follow label directions)
Avoid alcohol and smoking
Eat light, nutritious foods as tolerated
Keep your head elevated while sleeping
Wash hands frequently and avoid close contact to reduce spread
Seek urgent care if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, severe dehydration, confusion, or symptoms rapidly worsen
Contact a clinician if fever lasts more than 3 days, symptoms last more than 10 days, or you have high-risk conditions (pregnancy, immune suppression, chronic illness)
