Park both vehicles close enough for the cables to reach, but do not let them touch
Turn off both vehicles and remove the keys
Put both vehicles in park or neutral and set the parking brakes
Open both hoods and locate the batteries
Identify the positive and negative terminals on both batteries
Connect one red clamp to the dead battery’s positive terminal
Connect the other red clamp to the good battery’s positive terminal
Connect one black clamp to the good battery’s negative terminal
Connect the other black clamp to an unpainted metal ground on the dead vehicle, away from the battery
Make sure the clamps are secure and not touching each other
Start the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes
Try starting the dead vehicle
If it does not start, wait a few more minutes and try again
Once the dead vehicle starts, keep both vehicles running
Remove the cables in reverse order
Disconnect the black clamp from the grounded metal on the started vehicle
Disconnect the black clamp from the good battery’s negative terminal
Disconnect the red clamp from the good battery’s positive terminal
Disconnect the red clamp from the started battery’s positive terminal
Close both hoods
Let the started vehicle run for at least 15 to 30 minutes
Drive the vehicle to help recharge the battery
Wear eye protection and avoid touching metal clamps together
Do not connect the black clamp to the dead battery’s negative terminal if the vehicle manufacturer advises against it
