Rest quietly for 5 minutes before measuring
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and exercise for at least 30 minutes beforehand
Sit with back supported, feet flat on the floor, and legs uncrossed
Place the cuff on bare upper arm, 1–2 inches above the elbow crease
Use the correct cuff size for your arm
Keep the arm supported at heart level during the reading
Ensure the cuff is snug (you should be able to fit only one finger under it)
Take 2 readings at least 1 minute apart
Record the readings with date and time
If using a home monitor, follow its instructions for placement and start button
If readings are high, repeat after 5 minutes of rest and recheck
Seek urgent care if you have symptoms (chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness/numbness, severe headache, confusion) or if readings are very high
Contact a clinician if home readings are consistently elevated or if you have questions about technique
